The Babe Rainbow EP - Babe Rainbow (2015) Review
Babe Rainbow is a psychedelic rock band from Australia that formed in 2014. Very soon after the band signed to King Gizzard’s Flightless Records. They released their first EP in 2015 and it is a fun, kaleidoscopic ode to the ‘60s.
“Love Forever” hits the nail on the head when it comes to the 1960s psychedelic-pop sound and vibe. It’s not breaking any new ground, but who cares when it’s serving up nostalgic psych-pop so damn well? The reverb-drenched guitar solo is straight heat. Seeing this song live at Desert Daze was a great experience.
“Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest” has a name that sort of irks me as too “try hard” psychedelia, but the song doesn’t disappoint. The song looks up to The Beatles and early Pink Floyd vibe and they nail it. The introduction of the sitar adds a great layer in producing a ‘60s essence. I can definitely hear a taste of The Murlocs on this song as well.
“Planet Junior” may be the best gem on this EP. It is laid-back psychedelia where you can basically see the swirling liquid light show. It isn’t reinventing the wheel, but damn, it does ‘60s psych-pop justice. Good enough to throw on a Summer of Love playlist.
Closing the EP is “Ash May & Dr. Love Winston” where we are treated to some sweet vintage organ sounds. The song feels nostalgic and a similar ‘60s vibe to the others on here.
The Babe Rainbow EP isn’t anything revolutionary but what it does, it does well. It’s a good, groovy time and it is only 11 minutes long with not a second of filler. This band and EP are both worth checking out and so is catching their live show.
