Dua Lipa - Illusion Review

Once again, Dua Lipa drops a song where the extended version is way better than the single. All the single versions have felt a little neutered and safe, while the extended versions have some more meat on the bones.

"Illusion" is pretty damn close to a house track; they just need to let the instrumental breathe some more. However, its structure keeps it a pop song. It even ends sort of abruptly; I think letting the house beat go on for a bit would’ve made it a little better.

The synths throughout the entire song are amazing; they give a Lonerism/Currents feel. The main difference is that they’re in the background instead of upfront and center. The extended version feels so much like Kevin Parker; everything from the drums in the verse, the synth solo, and the bouncy bass. I know that in the past Kevin has spoken about how he’s written an album for Kylie Minogue, and I wonder how many of these songs come from that, if any at all.

All in all, I am thoroughly enjoying all these singles, though I am only ever listening to the extended versions. I am very excited for Radical Optimism in a few weeks; it is currently my most anticipated album of the year so far, and it has been an amazing year for music.
